Young Sook Charlene Kang, Deputy General Secretary for Mission Contexts and Relationships and Mission Education. Recent reports of an impending nuclear test in Kiju, North Korea reflect the nuclear crisis of North Korea, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (the DPRK). While the United States pushes for the resumption of the six-nation talks, China is reportedly opposed to putting any pressure on North Korea for such talks or applying sanctions against the country. In the current tension-driven situation, the advocacy and reconciliatory role of the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) has been important for peace in the Asia Pacific Region.

The last time I had seen Hava Keller, she was 72 years old, bleeding from the leg, and serene. It was a sunny day in April of 2001. Hava was one of a number of Israelis, Palestinians, and internationals who were in the Salfiit region of the West Bank, seeking to remove two large dirt and rock mounds from the road. They had been installed by the Israeli military.

The Reverend Sandra K. Olewine is a missionary of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church assigned to Catholic Relief Services in Jerusalem, Israel/Palestine. Tragic stories about people's difficulties leaving or entering Palestine/Israel are common among Palestinians. One such story of a Palestinian being denied basic human rights struck a particularly personal note with the staff at the International Center of Bethlehem (ICB) this week. Internationally-recognized musician Marwan Abado, an Austrian national of Palestinian origin, was denied entry upon his arrival on Sunday, 20 July and he was subsequently deported on the 21st.

arrow icon. UM Missionary, Rev. Sandra Olewine in Palestine : thoughts on the 'road map'
Many people the world over seem to be breathing a sigh of relief that the 'long awaited road map' has now been presented officially to both Palestinian and Israeli leaderships, hoping that this is a sign that building peace will become the main agenda for both peoples. However, the mood on the ground here is not one primarily of relief but rather "so what?"

arrow icon. The Challenges of Peacemaking in a Good Friday World
O God of peace and compassion, whose body is broken again and again for us, and by us, we ask for your presence in our hour of need. Heal us from our warring ways. We confess that we often want a triumphant God to act in might, but you offer to suffer with us. Give us the courage not to conform to the violent ways of this world. Transform our fears into hopes and empower us to turn the tables on any who seek to profit from war’s destruction....

arrow icon. Resolution on War in Iraq - GBGM Board of Directors
War brings death and destruction in the lives of so many. We weep with those who weep and affirm that war is not compatible with the teachings of Christ, as stated in the Social Principles, and we grieve at the division within the household of faith in time of war. Out of a sense of grief and pain and as followers of the Prince of Peace, we pray and hope constantly for peace.

arrow icon. Do Not Lose Heart! Suffering Servants Seeking Peace amid War

Prayer: O wounded God, we your people are afflicted by violence, perplexed by fear and hatred, persecuted for being different, and struck down by the ways of war. We lose heart! What can we do at this hour? Let your compassion – your suffering with us -- be felt in each of our hearts so that we too may, through pain and suffering with others... Make us, your wounded, warring and hurting children, be vessels of compassion for all our sisters and brothers, even our enemies. For in you we do not lose heart! Amen.

arrow icon. Cease Fighting! In the name of peace speak and do not be silent
Prayer of the Week: God of our silenced hopes, God of our wounded and dying kin, we your children are again divided against ourselves in war. When will we ever stop killing our brothers and sisters? When will we find our voices to say, Halt the war! In the name of peace. Fill our hearts, our lungs, our tongues, and our lives with the winds of your healing, empowering spirit. May we with boldness speak truth to power. May we with firmness and persistence break the cycle of fear and war that engulfs our neighbors. Lead us in your way of peace. Amen.
