Recent reports of an impending nuclear test in
Kiju, North Korea reflect the nuclear crisis of
North Korea, the Democratic People's Republic of
Korea (the DPRK). While the United States
pushes for the resumption of the six-nation
talks, China is reportedly opposed to putting
any pressure on North Korea for such talks or
applying sanctions against the country. In the
current tension-driven situation, the advocacy
and reconciliatory role of the General Board of
Global Ministries (GBGM) has been important for
peace in the Asia Pacific Region. It was a sunny day in April of 2001. Hava was one of a number of Israelis, Palestinians, and internationals who were in the Salfiit region of the West Bank, seeking to remove two large dirt and rock mounds from the road. They had been installed by the Israeli military. Tragic stories about people's difficulties
leaving or entering Palestine/Israel are common
among Palestinians. One such story of a
Palestinian being denied basic human rights
struck a particularly personal note with the
staff at the International Center of Bethlehem
(ICB) this week. Internationally-recognized
musician Marwan Abado, an Austrian national of
Palestinian origin, was denied entry upon his
arrival on Sunday, 20 July and he was
subsequently deported on the 21st. However, the mood on the ground here is not one primarily of relief but rather "so what?" O God of peace and compassion, whose body is
broken again and again for us, and by us, we ask
for your presence in our hour of need. Heal us
from our warring ways. We confess that we often
want a triumphant God to act in might, but you
offer to suffer with us. Give us the courage
not to conform to the violent ways of this
world. Transform our fears into hopes and
empower us to turn the tables on any who seek to
profit from war’s destruction.... We weep with those who weep and affirm that war is not compatible with the teachings of Christ, as stated in the Social Principles, and we grieve at the division within the household of faith in time of war. Out of a sense of grief and pain and as followers of the Prince of Peace, we pray and hope constantly for peace. Prayer: O wounded God, we your people are
afflicted by violence, perplexed by fear and
hatred, persecuted for being different, and
struck down by the ways of war. We lose heart!
What can we do at this hour? Let your
compassion – your suffering with us -- be felt
in each of our hearts so that we too may,
through pain and suffering with others... Make
us, your wounded, warring and hurting children,
be vessels of compassion for all our sisters and
brothers, even our enemies. For in you we do
not lose heart! Amen. Source: Mission Contexts and Relationships More about: Bible | communities | human rights | international affairs | justice | peace | prayers | UMCOR | United Methodist Church | war | Iraq | United States | Date posted: Apr 07, 2003
Prayer of the Week: God of our silenced hopes,
God of our wounded and dying kin, we your
children are again divided against ourselves in
war. When will we ever stop killing our
brothers and sisters? When will we find our
voices to say, Halt the war! In the name of
peace. Fill our hearts, our lungs, our tongues,
and our lives with the winds of your healing,
empowering spirit. May we with boldness speak
truth to power. May we with firmness and
persistence break the cycle of fear and war that
engulfs our neighbors. Lead us in your way of
peace. Amen. Source: Mission Contexts and Relationships More about: Christian love | communities | international affairs | prayers | violence | war | Iraq | United States | Date posted: Mar 31, 2003 |
