Globalization:

The Challenge of Global Community

The Church Center for the United Nations -  New York, New York

October 1 – 6, 2006

At this Primetimers event, participants will have an opportunity to explore the ways that globalization impacts our world today.  This seminar is intended to compliment the 2006 Mission Study on globalization.  Hear stories from brothers and sisters around the world about how globalization is impacting their communities, both in providing opportunities and in bringing about challenges.  Primetimers will have an opportunity to explore complex social issues, such as free trade, access to clean water, and livelihood, in light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Learn how United Methodists and United Methodist Women are engaged in mission in addressing these and other challenges.  Come explore together how to act responsibly on behalf of economic justice.

David Wildman, Executive Secretary for Human Rights and Racial Justice, GBGM and Mel Lehman, Editor, Children of Iraq Newsletter discuss the current war in Iraq with Primetimers.
The program will be hosted by the Women’s Division-sponsored United Methodist Seminar on National and International Affairs, located in the Church Center for the United Nations, across the street from the UN.  Participants will engage with speakers such as religious leaders, United Nations representatives, community activists, and representatives from a variety of global organizations.

Cultural activities throughout the event may include a tour of the United Nations, a walking tour of the city, and a theatre experience. Participants need to be able to walk several city blocks and would be required to climb a limited number of stairs.  Accommodations are not handicapped accessible.

Participants will have the opportunity to serve in mission in local ministries in New York, such as food pantries or soup kitchens.
