Bombita and LaHoya > ID# 90 > Two year volunteer to handle sponsorship details, and help with assemblies in two schools and youth groups in the villages of Bombita and LaHoya.
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - Iglesia Evangélica Dominicana (Dominican Evangelical Church)
The Dominican Evangelical Church is a Protestant Denomination. Its partners in the USA are the Presbyterian Church (USA), the United Methodist Church, and the Moravian Church. However, work groups from other denominations have also helped this economically poor but spiritually rich church. The Dominican Republic is a very poor country with many educational, medical, and vocational needs, which the church is attempting to address. The leadership of the D.E.C. has approved all of the following projects. Some of these projects have been under construction for ten or more years. Lack of funds has prevented their completion. The costs of completing each project depends on the fluctuating rate of exchange of the US dollar, the cost of construction materials, and the ability of the group to provide people with skills in cement block construction, electricity, plumbing, carpentry, etc. The D.E.C. does not necessarily expect a group to provide all the funds to finish a project. Some projects are completed over a number of years by a number of different groups. A building is completed floor by floor, and with this in mind, may need deep, strong foundations to support the eventual weight of two to three floors.
In order to cover expenses of coordination there is a fee of $10 per team member.
Samana > ID# 103 Chapel of Villa Clara > Located in a poor community, this rapidly growing church has purchased their own land and begun building a large church by faith. Through their sacrificial giving and hard work, the walls and roof are up. Now they need stucco and a floor. Teams can stay in a hotel and have meals prepared by church members.
Santo Domingo > ID# 111 Villa Consuelo Evangelical School > In a poor neighborhood in central Santo Domingo. Urgent need to finish the second floor of this overcrowded school. Two additional classrooms and two bathrooms are needed. This school still needs: lying of blocks, pouring of cement roof, adding doors, windows, stuccoing, electrical installations and sanitary installations.
Schools run by the Dominican Evangelical Church: In this poor country, where many families cannot afford the uniforms, shoes, and school supplies required, even for public schools, the D.E.C. schools try to provide scholarships for needy children, and to teach within a framework of Christian morality and love. All children receive at least one Christian Education class weekly.
Bani > ID# 115 National Church Camp in Bani > The National Camp is a site that has needed renovation for many years. Dormitories need new cement roofs, new dormitories need to be built, and the chapel needs some minor renovations as well. Lots of painting, electrical, carpentry, and block laying work are needed. It will take a number of volunteer teams to complete this project.
Samana > ID# 114 Samana Evangelical School > The central church has begun building a school to help the community with its lack of classroom space. The foundation and part of the walls have been laid. Everything else needs to be completed.
Higuey > ID# 101 Church of Los Soto > This congregation has recently purchased a piece of property and now is ready to begin the construciton process. Their dream is to have a small chapel with a zinc roof. Teams would stay in a local hotel and church members would prepare meals.
Cambita > ID# 112 Cambita Evangelical School > Cambita is a small town in the hills forty-five minutes from Santo Domingo. Three new classrooms are partially built, but need doors, windows, stuccoing, painting, electrical installations, and a cement floor. The church has begun expansion of the first floor and is building a second floor in order to add offices, a kitchen, meeting room, and resource areas. Teams could stay in a hotel, and church members would prepare meals.
Canoa > ID# 109 Church of Canoa > Not everyone can fit in the existing church for Sunday School and Bible School so an annex was begun. San Pedro de Macoris > ID# 107 Second Church of San Pedro de Macoris > The congregation is building a block annex behind the church in order to provide day care for working mothers.
Church of Yaguate > ID# 106 > Yaguate is a small town among the sugar cane fields, a forty-five minute drive southwest of Santo Domingo. The building directly behind the church will be used primarily for educational and medical purposes. The first floor has been completed and the church school is up and running. The immediate need is laying block, installing windows and doors, putting in electrical fixtures, stuccoing inside and out, laying the floor, and painting for the second floor. The group can stay in the homes of church members, or in a hotel in Santo Domingo. Members of the church would prepare meals.

Team would stay with families or in a modest hotel in the neighboring town of Duverge. Meals prepared by church members.
Duverge > ID# 104 Manse of Duverge > The old wooden manse is termite infested, very small and not salvageable. It has been decided to build the manse by adding a second floor to the new church structure. The idea is to build the manse with several bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a living/dining room. If the ministry in Duverge is to prosper, it is essential to build a suitable house for the pastor. Stay in a modest hotel in Duverge with meals prepared by church members.

Laying lots of blocks, stuccoing, pouring the ceiling, electrical work, installing doors, installing windows, and painting is needed. Teams could stay in hotels or possibly with church members. Church members would prepare meals.
Sabonetade Yasica > ID# 102 Chapel of La Pina > The members of this congregation have purchased land. It has been a dream for many years to have an actual church building. The plans are to build a small chapel with a cement roof due to severe weather. The idea is that this chapel would be a place of refuge for this poor community. A well has recently been dug on the church property to provide water to the community as a means of outreach. Teams could stay at local school depending on the time of year or in a hotel in a neighboring town called Cabarete. Meals would be prepared by church members.
Higuey > ID# 100 Chapel of El Zero > This congregation has been meeting in homes. Recently, they purchased a piece of land and the church has begun the project. The new chapel has been started and the walls of the basement are up. JAMAICA
GENERAL GUIDELINES Teams are received as partners with the Methodist Church in Jamaica. Projects to be undertaken may be at the Congregation, Circuit or District level. Teams are usually accommodated in one of 2 ways: split up and housed with local church families or housed at a central location. The optimum size is around 15 persons but will depend on the nature of the mission and the available facilities. We are always grateful for the project funds that teams carry to assist with the materials to be used during their time here. The current cost of materials makes it necessary to ask that teams prepare for a minimum contribution of US$3,000 toward materials.
Manchioneal Circuit
The Manchioneal Circuit is comprised of 5 congregations situated in the eastern end of the island. The Manchioneal Congregation is the ‘mother church’ for the Circuit. These rural congregations have demonstrated great fortitude in maintaining the mission under challenging circumstances.
Manchioneal > ID# 581 Manchioneal Vestry > This project involves the remodelling of the existing vestry to include a Prayer Room, kitchen and bathrooms. The congregation has already raised 50% of the required funds. Estimated Cost: US$12,000
Dalvey > ID# 580 Dalvey Chapel > The Dalvey Congregation is the smallest of the 5 churches in the Manchioneal Circuit. It has a Youth Fellowship of over forty and a thriving Sunday School in excess of thirty students. The present church was built with the help of a VIM team after the original church was destroyed by a hurricane. A project was approved for the painting of the church premises inside and out. Estimated Cost: US$1,000.
Portmore Circuit
New Portmore > ID# 197 New Portmore Methodist Church > The Portmore Circuit is the Methodist Church ’s newest Circuit in Jamaica, and was inaugurated in 1997. The Circuit is comprised of three congregations: Braeton, Portmore and Trinity. While Braeton and Trinity have their own place of worship, Portmore has been using a small chapel, belonging to the National Heritage Trust. The Portmore Circuit is established in the fastest growing community in the Caribbean with about 300,000 people actually living in the area at present, thus the opportunities for mission are tremendous. The actual size and state of the old chapel used by the Portmore congregation are certainly severe hindrances to numerical growth. Since its establishment just over twenty-five years ago, the Portmore congregation has been trying to have its own building. Ground for the new Portmore Methodist Church and Hall was broken in 2001 and building work started a little later. The foundations have been completed and the metal structure is in place. All this has been done so far by local contractors, mostly from funds which have been raised by the congregation over the years through events such as rallies, concerts, a food fair, etc. Serious help is urgently needed in order to continue and complete this work. The Chapel designed to shelter 600 persons with possibility to host others on both sides of the building, now needs to be covered. The concrete floor needs to be cast before doors and windows can be installed. A concrete roof needs to be cast right now for the first floor of the Hall which will also shelter the Circuit Office at the bottom and will be able to accommodate 500 people on top. Some 2,000 additional concrete blocks need to be laid, and concrete posts and beams need to be cast. Plumbing work required to install toilet facilities and electrical work are additional areas for which help will be needed. This is an interesting project which requires the help of several work teams. Estimated Cost: The first phase of this project which includes the Chapel and the bottom part of the Hall is estimated at 15 Million Jamaican Dollars, or approximately US$300,000. At this stage, some 6 Million Jamaican Dollars have been spent. Therefore, another 9 Million Jamaican Dollars or about US$180,000 is required to complete that phase. However, the work can be done step by step as the money becomes available.
Access: Norman Manley Airport, Kingston.

St Thomas Circuit
The St. Thomas Circuit, which has a membership of a little over 700, has the greatest number of properties, and the largest geographic spread of all the circuits in the Jamaica District. It is comprised of mainly rural communities, and its population, like that of rural populations in many parts of the world, suffers from a sparcity of active young adults, since many persons of this age range have left to seek work in the city and overseas. Keeping our property, particularly our manses and chapels, in good condition is therefore a continuing struggle, not aided by our location which is in the hurricane zone, and many parts of the parish are also prone to flooding. Next year, 2002, is our bicentenary year, and we are hoping to have all of our properties in a presentable condition by the end of our celebrations, so that, whilst we will continue to care for them, we will have more time and resources available for the true mission of the church.

Coke > ID# 203 Coke Chapel > This chapel is where the oldest congregation in the circuit worships (the society was formed in July 1802). We have a significant number of elderly members, and some very vibrant children's work, which outreaches into the community. The congregation is currently repairing the caretaker's cottage, and raising funds towards the repair of the roof and pipe-organ. Tasks: To repair the roof. To paint the chapel. Approximate cost: Roof: US$5,000 Painting: US$5,000
Pear Tree River > ID# 201 > This chapel needs a face-lift. Estimates soon to be supplied.
Sunning Hill > ID# 200 > This small community has a chapel which has still not been completed since the damage caused by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. Remaining tasks: Rendering of outside walls, Completion of internal concrete block walls, Painting, Plumbing, Leveling of yard, fencing, landscaping. Approximate cost: US$5,000
Aeolus Valley > ID# 204 > The congregation and community, together with some members from another circuit have worked hard to restore windows and floor of this chapel, but a bathroom is needed, and the porch, damaged in the last hurricane, needs to be reconstructed. Approximate cost: US$3,000
Yallahs > ID# 205 Yallahs Manse > The existing manse is in bad repair, and has been tenanted so that the land is occupied. We would love to be able to accommodate a minister at Yallahs again, and so are hoping to build a new manse. This will take a series of work-teams, together with local work, further information will follow as plans develop, but we hope to start building in 2002.

Holy Week is not a good time for teams, as Puerto Rican congregations are traditional & work may be done only Mon.-Wed. of that week. The month of Sept. should be avoided due to hurricane season.

COSTA RICA - The Methodist Church of Costa Rica
Tamarindo > ID# 753 Sunday School classrooms (aulas) & restrooms > A new aula (classroom) with sanitary facilities. This is a challenging project, logistically, due to its isolated location in the extreme lower Pacific-side area. (While you won't see Tamarindo on any CR road map, it is between Laurel and Golfito.) Facilities are quite limited, but for those teams (need two, maximum of 12 people) with the courage and inspiration to take it on, it would be a specially blessed memory.
Siquirres > ID# 754 Multipurpose building > The needs there include space for Sunday school and a kitchen/dining area for use by the local congregation (for good reason, the local folks are not permitted to use the big kitchen facilities). The idea is to construct one structure which will serve both needs on the site of the old templo (which is the only one of the original buildings remaining on this property.
Cocorí (in the San Isidro metro area) > ID# 676 New Church (templo) > A templo (sanctuary). This would be the first structure for this congregation. In time, they will need a casa pastoral (parsonage) and aulas (Sunday school classrooms). The templo project would require 5 teams. They have purchased a very good property for this church, but will not close the purchase til next year. See web page http://members.aol.com/crmissions/NLW.html
Rio Claro > ID# 675 Sunday School classrooms (aulas) > Expansion and renovation of existing aulas and cocina. This is a church with lots of kids and dedicated maestras (teachers) who have to shoe-horn into much-too small rooms--no space for anything but sitting and a kitchen far too small.. The plan is to knock out the front walls and run a new columna y baldosa wall out about 4 meters, and then re-roof the expanded building with steel-trussed roof. As always, we'll arrange to have the demolition done by local volunteers. We'll need three teams for this project. See web page http://members.aol.com/crmissions/NLW.html

Pavones (San Isidro Metro Area) > ID# 709 Pavones Church > Templo (sanctuary): A new congregation in the San Isidro metro-area. They have acquired an excellent site on which to build a 10x12 meter templo (sanctuary). The objective of Stage I will be to get the templo built to a state of functionality, i.e., the basic building completed ( including sanitary facilities and the pews and pulpit) but deferring the interior ceiling and floor tile. Stage I itself will require two sub-stages. Since the lot is bare ground with no utilities or facilities on-site, we will need to get the utilities installed and, at the minimum, construct the sanitary unit up front. Most likely, we will arrange for a squad of laborers from Hogar Crea, the residential drug re-hab facility in San Isidro, to install the columnas and baldosas (columns and panels) and sanitary system, about one week of work. The VIM teams will work on the roof, floor-slab, and at least some of the spackling and painting of the walls. It would be good to raise the 3 teams necessary for this project this fall/winter. Stage I teams will stay at the church in San Isidro and commute to/from the site.
El Peje > ID# 710 El Peje Church additions > Construct one structure which will serve the needs for space for Sunday school, and a kitchen/dining area for use by the local congregation, on the site of the old templo (which is the only one of the original buildings remaining on this property). It will require 4 or 5 "normal-sized") teams to do this project, but since there is no significant constraints of team size here, the job could be done with 2 or 3 "jumbo" teams.
Cortes > ID# 711 Renovation of Sunday school rooms and roof > Current aulas (Sunday school rooms) are so deteriorated as to be unuseable. Renovation of Sunday school rooms and roof need to take place. Also the old aulas at the rear of the property need to be demolished and replaced with a new aula. All together (to fund the casa refurbishing and the new aulas) need 3 teams.
Zent > ID# 712 Zent Multi-use building > A "multi-use" building, a meeting hall with a back section suitable for short-term residency by a visiting pastor and later useful as a Sunday school space. This will require 4 or 5 teams, which will base in Matina and commute to the site.

BRAZIL - The Methodist Church in Brazil
The Methodist Church in Brazil invites United Methodist Volunteers In Mission to join in partnership to work on specific mission outreach of the Methodist Church in Brazil. Each will have a support group local church, district or conference to complete the project. In addition to working on the project, you will have opportunity to learn about the Methodist Church in Brazil, relate to families & visit historic or cultural places. Brazil is too big to list everything but there are similar projects in other parts of Brazil if a group is interested in a particular part of the country.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Visas are required for entry and must be obtained PRIOR TO TRAVEL. Brazilian visas must be obtained in advance from the Brazilian Embassy or consulate nearest to the traveler's place of residence.
