PART B - Background Information / Site CriteriaAll volunteers sites are community groups, non-governmental organizations, or church-related bodies committed to global justice issues. Volunteer sites must meet the following criteria:
- Enter into partnership with the General Board of Global Ministries with the goal of providing exposure and learning opportunities for young adults.
- Provide a specific description of the volunteer’s work; an explanation of exactly how the volunteer will relate to and be involved with the overall activities of the organization; and an outline of the particular opportunities and methods of participation available to the volunteer.
- Provide on-going orientation for the volunteer in terms of the organization itself, the overall context of the organization’s work, and the broader community in which the work is done.
- Provide strong and continuous supervision for all volunteers through intentional processes of exposure, reflection, and dialogue about the volunteers’ experiences.
Arrange housing for groups of two to four volunteers within the same community. Where possible, the volunteers should be able to live together. The purpose of this is to facilitate intentional community living, experience, and reflection. Rent and other housing fees will be paid through the Global Justice Volunteers Program.
Address the root causes of social, political, and economic problems. For example, sites might work in the areas of: human rights, conflict resolution, youth advocacy, women and children’s empowerment, environmental action, economic development, health promotion, community organizing, workers’ rights, and/or refugee settlement.
- Challenge the volunteers to make critical links between faith and justice.
PART C - Placement Arrangements
1. Provide the context for and a brief description of specific ways in which the organization’s work is addressing social justice issues at this time. Attachments are welcomed.

Organization Staff and Community Leadership -
How many full-time or part-time paid staff work in the organization? Are there volunteers from within the local community?
How do members of the local community actively participate in the work of the organization, including the determination of priorities, decision making, and strategies for the work?
What are the most predominant religious, political, and social characteristics of the community?
5. Indicate options for room and board, i.e., living situations, available for the volunteers (2-4) in your community and the approximate monthly cost. The program design encourages a "homestay" model with modest reimbursement being provided to the hosting families.
6. Do you have experience or information regarding visa arrangements and/or work permits for volunteers within your organization? Remember that participants in the GJV program include non-U.S. citizens. Share anything that might be useful for us in making these arrangements.
7. Share the following information so that we may explain personal budget considerations to prospective volunteers:
(a) Volunteers are responsible for paying their own food. How much money should they budget for food per day? US $______________
(b) Volunteers are responsible for paying for their own local transportation. How much money should they budget for local transportation per day? US. $______________
