“We are taking our environmental issues to our conference schools of Christian mission,” says Karen Hewitson, Green Team member and regional contact for the North Central Jurisdiction Green Team.  Karen and others on the Green Team are taking displays and handouts on local issues of water and recycling to their Schools of Christian Mission.

The North Central team has been doing research on water contaminants:  those they identified were barium, lead, invasive species, manure or humanure, mercury, radon, run off, toxic waste, and waterborne diseases.  “We all learned quite a lot just from researching our topic, as everyone participated in the research,” says Karen.  Members of this team have produced a booklet with all of the information that each of them collected through a united effort (click here see separate brochure).

Kyung Yu, Green Team member of the West Ohio Conference spoke to presidents of "non-represented" conferences at Regional School of Christian Mission.  Julie Prouty of Wisconsin Conference,  Karen Hewitson of Northern Illinois Conference and Naomi Yaeger of the Dakotas Conference will all have displays at the schools.  They plan to show the Green Team video and Reclaiming A Natural Balance which  addresses the environmental issues in the pulp and paper industry.  They have been asked to speak at other schools of Christian mission within their jurisdiction as well.  They will also have fifteen minutes in each of the children and youth classes at the schools with interactive material and lots of discussion.  “We want the children to be excited about a clean environment!”

“We all have plans to speak at our fall Annual Meetings,” says Karen.  “We’re excited about making the connection between God’s creation and environmental justice.”

Mildred ‘Mid’ Lawrence, Green Team member of the Kansas East Conference took her display of articles and pictures on water, earth and global warming, dioxin and chlorine-free products and other handouts relating to the campaign on global water to her school of Christian mission.  She also received a request from the Kansas City District to supply them with handouts and information for their district meeting.  She will put her display up at the Kansas East Conference UMW Annual Meeting as well.

Kumja Lim and Thelma Wright, Green Team members of the Rocky Mountain Conference, were the first to take their show on the road, immediately after the Green Team’s formation in April.  They took displays and handouts on water conservation and the safety of drinking water to their conference UMW Retreat.  They are taking their display to the conference school of Christian mission and taking information on the Green Team’s national campaigns:  Chlorine-Free Campaign for Paper & Household Products and the UN WASH Campaign for water, sanitation and hygiene for all (click here to see National Campaign handout).
