| PEACE HYMNS |
| by Joyce D. Sohl |
 |
“May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!.” (Psalm 29:11) The psalmist prays for strength and peace for a community, not for himself. “Peace” in the psalm is shalom, which means wholeness and health; harmony with God, neighbor, and creation, and justice for all. Biblical peace is not simply the cessation of war or violence. Jesus calls the peacemakers blessed (Matthew 5:9), because they are builders and co-creators with God of a just and righteous reign of God.

O for a world where everyone respects each other’s ways,
where love is lived and is done with justice and with praise.
O for a world where goods are shared and misery relieved,
where truth is spoken, children spared, equality achieved. |

Jesus, known as the Prince of Peace, also lived in peace— sharing with all, associating with the unclean, and treating all persons as children of God. Jesus expects his followers to live a life that identifies them as disciples of his way, a life of peace. |

Let peace enfold my heart;
in peace my soul immerse;
and may God’s peace pervade the world,
then fill the universe! |

O Christ who by a cross made peace your sign,
who gives your peace in water, bread and wine;
O Spirit Christ who is our spirit’s home,
teach us the secret of the true shalom. |

Peace encompasses the end of violence, oppression, and the end of war. It requires building within each individual, community, and nation a commitment to resolving differences without violence; to controlling anger; to using power without oppressing; and to replacing despair, hatred, and greed with hope, love, and justice. |

When quiet peace is shattered by dreadful noise of war,
and we are bruised and battered by fighting’s constant roar,
Refrain
Lord, break the silence of your word
and let your healing voice be heard,
O let your healing voice be heard.
When troubles still our love-song and fear beats hard within,
when anger drowns the dove’s song and life’s a noisy din,
When clashing wills divide us and hearts refuse to mend,
when feelings scream inside us and agonies won’t end. |
