Mission Update
Empowering Women, Children and Youth to Sing a New Song

"Sing a New Song!" is a theme for United Methodist Women during this Assembly year. Like its predecessor organizations, United Methodist Women is constantly involved in making it possible for women, children and youth to "Sing a New Song!" The first missionaries sent to India -- Isabella Thoburn, a teacher, and Clara Swain, a doctor -- went to minister to women and children.

That tradition is alive today. Our organization, which is almost 1 million members strong, continues to follow the teaching of Jesus as given in Matthew 25:40:

"...just as you did it to one of the least of these...you did it to me."

The Women’s Division supports missionaries sent into the field by the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, and supports projects and programs nationally and internationally through sacrificial giving of each member of United Methodist Women. This enables many of "the least of these" to "Sing a New Song!"

Neighborhood Services Organization in Oklahoma City, Okla., is one example. Neighborhood Services has remodeled a former crack house into seven three-bedroom apartments named Martha’s House. A single mother and her children who recently moved into one of the apartments had been homeless. The family is now in a stable living environment and receiving needed social services. I have no doubt they are "Singing a New Song!"

A child in Haiti is alive and well because her mother received a birth kit containing razor blades, gauze, shoestrings, soap and a nailbrush. The kit, sent by United Methodist Women through the United Methodist Committee on Relief, enabled a healthy birth. Mother and child were helped to "Sing a New Song!"

Each individual United Methodist Women member may only be able to give a small amount, but when combined with the giving of all members, great things are accomplished. Thank you for your continued giving to make mission possible for "the least of these."

Women’s Division Vice President for Finance
