The Jordan River is one of the most important geographical features in biblical tradition. It ran north-south, from above the Sea of Galilee in the north, to the Dead Sea in the south. It is snake-like in the north with lush vegetation at its banks. It is narrow and shallow, set in a trench with steep banks. It is not all that big, compared to rivers like the Mississippi or Ohio, but was of great importance to the arid land of Palestine.
