The term "exile" refers to the experience of the Israel in the sixth century BCE when King Nebuchadnezzar conquered Israel, and forced the people to leave their homes and live in Babylon (read the story in 2 Kings 25). The exile came to symbolize a time of failure, defeat and despair. It forced the community to examine itself, its history, its understanding of God, and its relationship with other peoples. This examination resulted in new forms of worship and new ways of communicating religious experience, including the book of Joshua.
