Amphyctiony

This is a technical term for the type of political organization Israel had during its tribal period. This period began under the leadership of Moses and Joshua, and lasted for approximately 200 years, until Saul became the first king of Israel. The Israelite amphyctiony consisted of a federation of twelve tribes who stayed in mutually supportive relationship because of shared religious commitment to Yahweh.
