The Women's Division response to specifically targeted groups, funded by the Women's Division in 2000

The following is the Women's Division  response to the specific "secular" groups that are targeted by RENEW and the Institute on Religion and Democracy in the UM Action Briefing in 2002. Information of these groups came from the 2000 Disclosure Report of the Women's Division, but the Division stated that these groups "misread some of the actual amounts granted. Please note that these expenditures are a very small part of our total $37.7 million expenditures for the year 2000. The 2001 Disclosure Report is available from the Women's Division and has been distributed to Conference Treasurers of United Methodist Women).

All grants made by the Women's Division in any given year are: 1) Approved by the directors of the division; 2) Are scripturally based and within the theological stance of the United Methodist Church; 3) Are in compliance with the adopted Social Principles and resolutions of the General Conference of the United Methodist Church. (For the year 2000 it was the 1996 Discipline that was operative). We have found that working with groups and coalitions multiplies our effectiveness in addressing issues of justice and peace in our world.

NAMED IN UM/ACTION BRIEFING OF SEPTEMBER 2002
(UM/ACTION and RENEW Are Not Officially Related to the United Methodist Church)

The following provides a brief description of the organization, the amount of the grant in 2000, a web link to the organization, a scriptural basis for the grant, and a reference from the United Methodist Book of Resolutions or United Methodist Book of Discipline. These organizations are primarily networks of faith groups or work extensively with faith-based groups.

They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Scriptural Reference: Luke 10: 30-37

"A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' 36"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" 37The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."

1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

1My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism. 2Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. 3If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here's a good seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on the floor by my feet," 4have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong? 8If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right. 9But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.

Then he will thank you, and it will be regarded as a righteous act in the sight of the LORD your God. 14 Do not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother Israelite or an alien living in one of your towns. 15 Pay him his wages each day before sunset, because he is poor and is counting on it. Otherwise he may cry to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin. 16 Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin. 17 Do not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge. 18 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the LORD your God redeemed you from there. "6And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? 20 But the wicked will perish: The LORD's enemies will be like the beauty of the fields, they will vanish-vanish like smoke. 21 The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously; 22 those the LORD blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be cut off.
