Tips on
Avoiding the Plastic Habit

Plastic is so pervasive in our lives. Instead of feeling like avoiding plastics is a futile goal and thereby ignoring it, a more sucessful approach might be to implement it in stages such as:

  1. Do not buy any plastic item that you will use only once before throwing it away (like Styrofoam cups).

  2. Do not buy any plastic item that is disposable (such as a pen or razor).

  3. Do not buy any new plastic decorative items (such as refrigerator magnets, flowers, or jewelry).

  4. Re-use all plastic items you currently own until they are thoroughly worn out (like cups, tablecloths, pens, and food storage bags).

  5. Buy only plastic items made from recycled material and wherever possible substitue other items made from less toxic substances.

  6. Buy only plastic items that you can recycle (like milk or soda pop bottles). The only plastic items that are commonly known to biodegrade into harmless substances at this time is a brand of sandwich bag sold by "Harmony" and special peanuts for shipping packages. Both are made from plan cellulose and can biodegrade if you compost them rather than toss them into the trash.

  7. Do not buy the product if it is plastic or wrapped in plastic. (If you absolutely must buy a product wrapped in plastic, consider sending the wrapping back to the manufacturer with a letter of complaint.
