  • United Methodist Women Can Respond to Katrina’s Devastation 
    United Methodist Women called to assist in the disaster relief efforts of those affected by Hurricane Katrina. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina’s devastating blow to Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, the United Methodist Women’s Division is still working through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and General Board of Global Ministries’ networks to assess damage to national mission institutions and mission programs and personnel.

  • Education Bill Helps Pressured Military Recruiters 
    The woman's bumper sticker read: "Half my heart is in Iraq." Her husband a medical doctor spent close to a year there while she struggled with three children at home. He's back in Washington State now, often with nightmares about the kids he performed surgery on -- and with the understanding that he may return to the war.

  • Profile: Joan Chapin 
    Joan Chapin accepts the peacemaker award from the World Council of Churches. Joan Chapin’s commitment to work for peace with justice has its roots in the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi. When her pastor gave her an illustrated copy of the prayer, it moved her to seek ways to advocate for peace.

  • Women's Division staff and Directors stop for a moment of silence in solidarity with Cindy Sheehan
    Signs symbolizing the fallen in the Iraq war were held during the vigil. On Friday, August 19, 2005, 50 directors and staff of the Women's Division — joined by members of the community — stood on a main street in Stamford, Conn., at a noon break from their National and International Committee meetings. In solidarity with the mothers of fallen soldiers camped outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Tex., the demonstrators prayed for peace, for fallen military and their families, and for all victims of the Iraq war.

  • United Methodist Women urged to stop for a moment of silence 
    As part of United Methodist Women's Prayers for Peace campaign, the Women's Division of the General Board of Global Ministries is urging the one-million members to stop for a moment of silence on Friday at noon. The action is in solidarity with United Methodist woman, Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in the Iraq war and who has been holding vigil outside President George W. Bush's Texas ranch.

  • Teen and College/University Consultative Group Meeting 
    Teen and College/University Consultative Group members during their meeting in July, 2005. On July 14, 2005, thirty-five members of the 2005-2007 Teen and College/University Consultative Group flew to San Francisco, Cal., for their first meeting as a team. Members were representative of all five jurisdictions, from New York to Hawaii.

  • Local Women Ensure Children Go Back to School with Full Backpacks 
    Everett Elementary School received 200 backpacks full of school supplies including CD holders, files, folders, markers, pens, pencils, and notebooks donated by The Office Depot. When Mary Ann Bede retired as a sixth grade teacher from Everett Elementary School in Lincoln, Neb., her passion for children didn't cease.

  • Women Offer Hands-On Help to Public Schools 
    Fondren Hall, one of several buildings on the Scarritt-Bennett Campus which has several meeting rooms. More than 150 United Methodist Women members active as advocates, volunteers and professionals in public schools attended the Women’s Division-sponsored event to network and learn more about ways to support U.S. public education. Each participant represented a local, district or conference unit of the organization or a local church active in a broad range of ministries that support public education.
