Jan Love began her tenure as chief executive of the Women’s
Division on August 1, 2004. Known in the organization, the
Church, ecumenically and academically, Ms. Love brings to the
organization a variety of experiences that have formed her as a

Children's Sabbath 2004
"Say That I'm a Child of God: Assuring Justice
and Care to LEAVE NO CHILD BEHIND" is the theme
for this year ís Children's Sabbath. On October
15-17, the 13th annual observance will take
place
in churches, temples and mosques all over the
country. Endorsed by over 200 denominations and
faith groups, Children's Sabbath is an
opportunity to bring the needs of children to
the
attention of our churches and communities.

On September 21, 2004 at 4:00 p.m., the Tillman
Chapel at the Church Center for the United
Nations will observe the International Day of
Peace with the theme "We the Peoples Cry Out for
Peace: "A Sacred Call".

The National Healthcare Crisis Americans are Dying for Health Care
H.R. 676, The United States National Health
Insurance Act, a bill before Congress that will
cover every American for every health care need,
including affordable prescriptions, dental,
optical, and all mental and physical health costs.
H.R. 676 will cost taxpayers less than what we pay
now. Health care will become a right and not just
a privilege for those who can afford it.

UMW Action Alert: Countdown to Freedom From Debt!
At the G-8 summit in early June, world leaders
considered for the first time a proposal that
would provide 100% multilateral debt cancellation
for impoverished nations. Debt cancellation is
desperately needed – this year alone, 3 million
people in Africa will die due to the HIV/AIDS
pandemic. Yet countries on the African continent
will send an estimated $15 billion in debt
service
to the IMF, World Bank, and wealthy creditor
nations this year.

UMW Action Alert - Sudan Update

the Sudan, the humanitarian crisis continues to
worsen.

International Day of Peace September 21
Expressing appreciation that the UN General
Assembly has designated September 21 as an
International Day of Peace, the WCC General
Secretary Samuel Kobia shared with Secretary
General Kofi Annan his intention to propose to
the WCC governing bodies that they invite member
churches to mark that day with special prayer
services.
