Organizational Information
The Women’s Division, General Board of Global Ministries, United Methodist Church is the national organization for United Methodist Women, the women’s mission organization of the church with membership of 800,000 - 1,000,000. The purpose of the Women’s Division is:
"The Women’s Division shall be actively engaged in fulfilling the mission of Christ and the Church and shall interpret the purpose of United Methodist Women. With continuing awareness of the concerns and responsibilities of the Church in today’s world, the Women’s Division shall be an advocate for the oppressed and dispossessed with special attention to the needs of women and children; shall work to build a supportive community among women; and shall engage in activities that foster growth in the Christian faith, mission education, and Christian social involvement throughout the organization." (¶1317, 2000 Book of Discipline)
The purpose of United Methodist Women is:
"The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the Church." (¶155.4 Article 3, 2000 Book of Discipline)
The Women’s Division is a 135 year old organization with emphasis on mission with women, children and youth around the world. It is a laywomen’s organization with a national staff of 32 executives and volunteer leadership at all levels of the organization. The Board of Directors consists of 50 laywomen elected through the channels of United Methodist Women. It has an annual budget of about $20 million and an extensive program of leadership development, mission education, spiritual enrichment and social action. It operates in three primary locations: 475 Riverside Dr., New York, NY; Church Center for the United Nations, New York, NY; and 100 Maryland Ave., Washington DC.
Position Description
The position of Deputy General Secretary is the Chief Executive Officer for the Women’s Division. As such the person holding this position supervises personnel, program, policies, public relations, communication strategies, budget preparation, etc. She serves as division spokesperson in church and society. Much public speaking is required and a monthly column is written for Response. She is the chairperson of the Staff Cabinet of the Division and a member of the Staff Cabinet of the General Board of Global Ministries.
The Deputy General Secretary must be a member of the United Methodist Church. (¶714.6, 2000 Book of Discipline)
Time Line
All applications must be received on or before January 1, 2004.
The screening/interview process will occur during January/February 2004.
A recommendation for election will be submitted to the Women’s Division at its regular meeting March 19-22, 2004.
The position is available August 1, 2004.
