William Wilberforce

1759-1833

In his book on John Wesley, Charles Yrigoyen, Jr., says that "while Wesley did not directly approach the government to outlaw slavery, his views strongly influenced and encouraged some of the most effective leaders in the anti-slavery movement. One was William Wilberforce, who was a member of Parliament. Parliament finally outlawed England's participation in the slave trade in 1807" (p. 56).
