The Jubilee 2000 Petition & CommitmentWomen's Division Moves to Help End the Debt Crisis |
Please print the following petition.
We, the undersigned, believing that the new millenium should bring hope to the poorest people and nations of the world, recognize
That the majority of the populations in highly indebted countries are now paying the consequences of debts incurred by past governments; and therefore, are suffering political, economic, social, and physical turmoil; and are condemned through this process to perpetual poverty;
That escalating debt repayments in such countries divert resources that might otherwise be directed to community health care, clean water, education, and production needs, etc.
That it would be an Act of Justice to proclaim a year of Jubilee - to forgive the mistakes of the past made by both lenders and borrowers - and to cancel the backlog of unpayable debts of these poorest countries.
We do, therefore, call upon... the leaders of lending nations, commercial and international financial institutions, to take effective steps to cancel the unpayable debts owed by highly indebted poor countries by the end of the year 2000; and, further, to urge the governments of these countries to channel the funds made available by the cancellation of their unpayable debts, into policies and programs which benefit their poorest citizens.
