Global Refugee Response

   The Global Refugee Response, Advance #982540-1, enables UMCOR Refugee Ministries to respond to emergency requests from projects that are not otherwise funded through the Advance. Projects receiving grants in the year 2000 included:

• The Colegio Alianza Cristiana in Cali, Colombia which offers education to displaced children abandoned by parents who are drug addicts, prostitutes or criminals. Education is the only chance these children will have to break the vicious cycle of poverty and addiction and improve their lives.
• The Bohol UMC Refugee Center in the Philippines which is accommodating 176 families that were forced to evacuate their home by the Philippine army.
• The provision of food and adequate medical care to the children assisted by Sri Lankan Children Disabled in War.
• The Burmese Border Consortium which provides food and relief to 120,000 Burmese refugees on the Burma/Thailand border.
