Landmines Removal Photo Library #2

Landmines maim and kill, and they do much more– they disrupt entire communities. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is committed committed to clearing landmines so that people can resume their daily activities, reclaiming their land, property and lives from these insidious weapons.

The following photos were taken by Paul Dirdak, Deputy General Secretary of UMCOR of UMCOR, in Mozambique. At the right of the small pictures are links to larger versions in either web (low resolution, 72 dpi) or printed media (high resolution, 300 dpi) format. You may reproduce these photos with the credit lines listed below and UMCOR's web address: http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/ .

big red machine

The Agri-flail machine is currently being tested by the UMCOR-supported Accelerated Demining Program (ADP) in Mozambique. Use of this machine and trained dogs increases the safety of deminers. Credit: Paul Dirdak, UMCOR, Mozambique © 2001

The Agri-flail machine is a modified agricultural tractor frame with a flail consisting of a rotating drum with lengths of chain attached. The flail part of the machine (front)

The Agri-flail machine removes the vegetation from the piece of land that is being cleared. The operator is inside an armored cab and further protected by being behind and higher than the flail unit. spade in the dirt by a mine

A bulldozer turned this mine on edge but did not detonate it. A landmine exposed in this way is more dangerous for the deminers. The Agri-flail detonates mines or leaves them in a less dangerous position. The engine is armored and located as far back from potential explosive areas as possible. Your contribution to UMCOR Advance #982575, "Landmine Removal" will help the Accelerated Demining Program save people's lives in Mozambique. Credit: Paul Dirdak, UMCOR, Mozambique © 2001

The flail part of the machine (side view)

The flail penetrates the surface by two centimeters and absorbs the explosions of mines planted to that depth. man pointing to exposed mine

This mine was detonated by the mechanized flail. As soon as it is safe to return to a former community site, people come back, rebuild houses and businesses, reopen farms and schools and resume their lives.
