Landmines Removal Photo Library #1

Landmines maim and kill, and they do much more– they disrupt entire communities. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is committed to clearing landmines so that people can resume their daily activities, reclaiming their land, property and lives from these insidious weapons.

The following photos were taken by Paul Dirdak, Deputy General Secretary of UMCOR, in Mozambique. At the right of the small pictures are links to larger versions in either web (low resolution, 72 dpi) or printed media (high resolution, 300 dpi) format. You may reproduce these photos with the credit lines listed below and UMCOR's web address: http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/ .

This dog sniffs for landmines. Dogs are trained to smell the outgassing of the mine's explosive and point to the landmine without stepping on it. Credit: Paul Dirdak, UMCOR, Mozambique © 2001

Dogs are more effective and less time consuming than metal detectors because they only detect mines, not every piece of metal. Your contributions to UMCOR Advance #982575, "Landmine Removal," will help train and care for mine detection dogs. The estimated cost for training is $25,000 per dog.
