NEW YORK, Oct. 10, 2006—Wheat donated to the United Methodist Committee on Relief in the Democratic Republic of Congo by the US Department of Agriculture for monetization resulted in $4 million to support farmers and people in rural areas of DRC. The funds will provide comprehensive assistance for people living in rural areas through four key programs and additional donated food will provide needed nutrition to displaced people living in camps.

Help for Farmers

As many as 10,000 farmers will receive training to improve their agricultural techniques and help increase their crops. Approximately 50 farmers associations will be developed through this program to help farmers support one another throughout the growing process.

UMCOR DRC will also help ensure the crops get to market through a rural market development program. This program will give 50,000 community members better access to their local markets through improved roads and refurbished market centers.

Improved water access is another result of this program. Sixty villages will have increased access to potable and irrigation water to improve the health of the community and foster food security.

A microfinance program will establish 1,000 savings associations, allowing approximately 7,000 farmers to participate in a small loan program that will help them grow their businesses.

Food for the Hungry

Food not sold through the monetization process will go directly to 16,000 displaced people living in camps in Matadi, near the capital city of Kinshasa. This additional food will provide needed nutrition for adults and children alike.
