Hurricane Ivan’s 120 to 145 mph winds and rains battered the island nation of Grenada for 10 hours in September 2004. This powerful storm killed 39 people and left thousands homeless. Eighty percent of the island’s infrastructure was demolished or significantly damaged as well as most of the crops. A year later, Ivan was still in the forefront of people’s memories and conversations. Hurricane Emily arrived in July 2005 causing further damage and hampering reconstruction efforts already in progress.
UMCOR deployed an assessment team to Grenada in the weeks immediately following Hurricane Ivan. The team determined that UMCOR could contribute significantly to the island’s recovery by opening a field office there. UMCOR Grenada opened its doors in late 2005, and is actively involved in facilitating transitional development there.
