Stolac
Borojevici lies on the top of a hill overlooking the
valley of Stolac. The village was almost totally destroyed
during the war and its the population forced into
displacement. Nearly all of the villagers have returned
including younger villagers who are now building houses, a
promising sign for the future of the village.
Mr Hasan
Obradovic and his wife, Mevlida, earn their income through
agricultural production, namely the cultivation of
vegetables such as peppers and potatoes. They received an
UMCOR partial repayment subsidized loan in 2003 which they
used to acquire a small cultivator. Mr Obradovic spoke of
the severe drought last summer which led to acute water
shortages. He is hoping for a better crop this year.
Mr Rasim Obradovic, who is related to Hasan and
Mevlinda, returned to the village in 1998. He is a member
of Agroplod and received assistance from them, under a
scheme funded by UMCOR, which enabled him to purchase a
cultivator. He has several greenhouses and grows potatoes,
peppers and tomatoes. He owns land in the valley which
he has planted with an early potato variety. He told me
that in a good year, he can
harvest as early as April when he is able to sell them for a better
price per kilo.
Many villagers are Agroplod members. They own
much of the land in the valley between Borojevici and
Stolac town. To date, 34 Agroplod beneficiaries have
received training in organic growing techniques and are
growing organic produce including potatoes, peppers, table
grapes, herbs such as lavender and more.
