Peace-building, education and conflict transformation
In 2003, UMCOR continued to
implement the 'Integrated Kindergarten Project' in Mostar, a program which
assimilates children with disabilities into the regular pre-school program and
which is open to children of all ethnic backgrounds from all six Mostar
Municipalities. Present at the official opening ceremony of the Integrated
Kindergarten were representatives of the City of Mostar administration,
religious leaders of the three main religious communities in BiH, community
members, representatives from partner organization, Diakonie Gallneukirchen, and
parents of the children. The first school year was successfully completed in
July and the second year commenced with a new intake of children in September.
At the end of 2003, direct project management of the Kindergarten was
transferred to a local structure.
In 2000/1, the 'Teacher Training
in Peace and Civic Education in Primary Schools' project was funded by ICCO. Primary school
teachers in the FBiH and RS received training
in democratic rules, civil society
structure and interactive education methodology. Over 200 primary school
teachers learned about peace and civic education and passed on their skills to
fellow teachers.
Funded by USIP, the 'Peace
Education and Peer Mediation Project' aimed to change attitudes about conflict,
as well as preparing children for participation in a democratic society. Through
a series of peace education workshops and two peer mediation programs,
students learned about conflict resolution skills while developing cooperative
attitudes and emphatic relationships toward themselves and others. 192 students
and 115 teachers in the FBiH and RS benefited from this project.
