Missionaries Named to Lead Relief Supply Depot

NEW YORK, Feb. 22, 2006—United Methodist missionaries Charles and Patty Maddox have received an appointment to serve as director and volunteer coordinator at a national relief supply depot in Baldwin, LA. UMCOR Sager Brown is operated by United Methodist Committee on Relief.

The Maddoxes have been long-term missionaries for nearly a dozen years. In their previous assignment they served in Haiti for more than five years as coordinators for United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM), managing a United Methodist guest house in Petionville, a suburb of Port au Prince. “Haiti prepared us for this move,” reflected Charles Maddox, though the scale of operations there was smaller. At UMCOR Sager Brown the husband-wife team will coordinate the work of over 2,800 volunteers a year on average.

Before Haiti the pair served in Ghana, Patty as a family and community worker and Charles as a teacher and vocational trainer. Both are Kentucky natives and are lay members of the Kentucky Annual Conference.

The UMCOR Sager Brown depot distributes millions of dollars of emergency supplies, clean-up tools, and basic necessities to displaced persons, storm survivors, and volunteers all over the world. The Maddoxes take over responsibilities there from interim director Ted Warnock, also a United Methodist missionary.

Before their long-term missionary service began, Charles worked at two Fortune 500 companies, and Patty was a homemaker. They came to see their new careers as missionaries as a calling. At UMCOR Sager Brown they are already booking volunteers for 2007 and anticipate serving 25,000 meals in the next year. Charles Maddox will oversee the shipment of over $4 million in emergency supplies.

The relief supply ministry that Charles and Patty Maddox now lead is made possible by generous donations of cash and in-kind materials from United Methodists. Donations for UMCOR Advance #901440, Material Resource Ministry, may be mailed to UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087. Donors wishing to use a major credit card may call toll free, 800-554-8583.
