"The Souper Bowl of Caring" is a great opportunity for United Methodist congregations to involve youth in mission and raise funds for hunger projects. As they leave church, parishioners are encouraged to put one dollar each into soup pots held by youth, who have organized the event and participated in the worship service. This year, to add to this already creative effort, many youth groups from congregations and schools will also collect money to provide aid for the tsunami and earthquake surivivors in southern Asia.
"The devastation of hunger in this country and the tsunami in Asia will go on long after Souper Bowl Sunday," said the Rev. Dr. Brad Smith, founder and executive director of the Souper Bowl of Caring. "But imagine the positive impact if even half of the 130 million people who watch the big game gave one dollar to help those in need."
