Sudan Relief and Development Supplies Cost List

Posted: June , 2004 Click to Visit Global News.

The Darfur region of western Sudan has suffered sixteen months of armed conflict. About thirty thousand residents have been killed, over a million people displaced. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) supports relief and development work in Sudan that meets immediate emergency needs and longterm recovery solutions. The United Methodist humanitarian agency is working through its ecumenical partner, Action by Churches Together (ACT).

ACT released an illustrative relief supplies cost list in June 2004. UMCOR invites church to use this list to encourage donations to UMCOR's Sudan Emergency, Advance #184385. The range of cost enables larger or smaller United Methodist congregations, groups, and individuals to choose the amount of their contribution. Combine education about this crisis and the church's response and an invitation to give in presentations in contexts such as youth groups, church school classes, and Vacation Bible School. As part of this appeal, you can distribute UMCOR's insert/flyer on the crisis in Sudan.

*Supplemental nutrition is food given to severely malnourished individuals. The food is above and beyond the daily ration alloted to displaced people in the camps. In the Darfur region of Sudan, ACT partners are giving biscuits fortified with vitamins, protein, oil, and sugar to malnourished children. The extra nourishment and calories helps children regain weight and health. In this cooperative humanitarian approach to the crisis in Sudan, the World Food Programme provides the basic food ration to camp inhabitants.
