Camp Radusha, the first camp ready to receive refugees, is one of the smaller camps. As of April 12, 1999, the date of this story, 1,600 refugees were waiting here.

At Camp Radusha

It is one of the most difficult camps in Macedonia and very isolated. Mobile phones do not work; trucks with food supplies are hardly able to climb the hill and water supply is also a problem. In the daytime temperature can be nice, but at night it is incredibly cold.

At first, Camp Radusha had no gravel so the ground turned into a pool of mud. Tents were too close to one another.

MCIC/ACT worked day and night to make some improvements in the camp.

Refugees had to plow through the mud to reach their tents. MCIC/ACT helped put gravel on the ground to fight the mud.

Three engineers from Norwegian Church Aid worked on the water supply and sanitation. In one day late in the first full week of April, the number of toilet-units was tripled.

Within a few days there will probably be enough food, plastics and mattresses for everyone.
