Bishops' Appeal 1997 Spring Floods and Storms

We are responding to people affected by the 1997 spring floods and storms. United Methodists throughout the United States are being joined by other people in providing financial contributions through UMCOR and collecting relief supplies.

The United Methodist Council of Bishops has approved a church wide Appeal for the 1997 Spring Floods and Storms. Contributions to this appeal will be used to assist in recovery from blizzards and floods in the Dakotas and Minnesota Conferences, as well as from tornadoes, rain and flooding earlier this spring in Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. Your gifts to this appeal will help repair and reconstruct residences and church buildings.

More than 16 annual conferences, 50 United Methodist Church properties, and 60,000 individual homes have sustained damage. There is a massive housing shortage. In addition to damaged buildings, farmers have lost livestock and will not be able to plant crops in time to meet the short growing season in the Upper Midwest.

How You Can Help

Make your check payable to your local church or 'Advance GCFA'. Be sure to write 1997 Spring Floods and Storms, UMCOR Advance #901680-3 on the check. For local church and annual conference credit, give your gift to your local treasurer, who will send it to your conference treasurer. Gifts are forwarded to Advance GCFA, P.O. Box 9068, GPO, New York, New York 10087-9068.

Remember one hundred percent of what you give to this Advance Special goes to the emergency. UMCOR staff and administrative costs are funded through the generous gifts of United Methodists to their One Great Hour of Sharing.

To register for rebuilding work in the coming months, call the Volunteer Line at 1-800-918-3100.
