Cutting a block of cheese.

UMCOR distributes cheese to orphanages and retirement homes. UMCOR started its Free Cheese Distribution Program in 1999 and continued it through December 2000. The goal of the program was to improve the health and food security of 13,000 vulnerable, institutionalized persons by providing them with a daily ration of cheese. By using locally produced cheese, the program also expanded the market for local dairy processors and increased employment opportunities in the dairy industry. In total, more than 309 tons of cheese were purchased and distributed to 18,000 beneficiaries during the two years.
