What is an “Advance?”

The full name for the Advance program is “The Advance for Christ and His Church.” The program was created in 1952 as a way to allow Methodists and later, United Methodists, as well as other interested individuals to contribute to specific programs, missionaries, and ministries. Advance giving is often called “second-mile giving” because it goes beyond the “first mile” of contributing to apportionments and World Service Funds.

Whenever you give to an Advance, 100% of your gift goes to that project. Administrative and overhead expenses are taken from other channels. For UMCOR, that channel is the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. UMCOR receives no World Service funds.

The Advances described on these web pages describe programs that are foundational to UMCOR’s work. While there are approximately 200 UMCOR-related Advances, these 28 programs represent the bulk of UMCOR’s work in the world.
