Hurricane Frances Aftermath & Response

These photos, available in low resolution web versions and high resolution print versions may be used to promote the United Methodist Church's emergency response to hurricanes in 2004 and the work of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). All photos were taken in Florida by Tom Hazelwood/UMCOR on September 9, 2004. Descriptions of the photos are below the photo album. Photograph Descriptions

Row One: The first two photos show volunteers at United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches preparing hot meals to take to elderly people who are without electricity and have no means of getting food. On September 9, 2004, they were serving about 200 meals a day. The next three photos were taken at Haitian United Methodist Church in Fort Pierce. Esquibel Duclona, the church's lay leader, is shown on the the photo at the far right of the row. In addition to free hot meals, the church also gave local families a place to spend time after Hurricane Frances struck. A story about this church is online. The remainder of the photos were taken at Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church in Riviera Beach (Palm Beach area). Row Two: People help cleanup Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church. The last two photos on the right show Nathan Bearfour, 94 years old, who came to help clean his church. Row Three: The last photos show the roof of Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church. Like many buildings in Florida, it sustained roof damage. The pastor of is Cleveland English, who is wearing denim shirt. In one photo, Timothy W. Whitaker, bishop of the Florida Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church, is on the roof with Cleveland English.
