Arcadia

Mobile home parks received the brunt of damage from Hurricane Charley. A number of trailers were completely destroyed. The homes of many of Arcadia's Hispanic residents were either significantly damaged or destroyed August 13 by Hurricane Charley, whose winds were so strong here that pieces of mobile homes were found in trees. Many families lost all their belongings along with their homes. Hispanic residents here make up 60 percent of Arcadia's population of 32,000. Primarily citrus, construction or migrant workers, they have very little disposable income because the majority of their money is sent back home to their native countries. Michael Wacht's photo shows the visit of news crew from CNN to Arcadia on August 20. CNN was doing a story on the effects of Hurricane Charley on migrant farm workers. Reporter Sara Dorsey visited Trinity United Methodist Church in Arcadia and spoke with the Rev. David Harris, pastor and conference disaster response coordinator, about his work in the community. Wacht, Florida Conference director of communications, translated for the CNN reporter as she interviewed several Hispanic residents.

Punta Gorda

Ice, food, water and hot meals were available for free at First United Methodist Church. While crews worked to repair damage to the sanctuary and other church buildings caused by Hurricane Charley, volunteers unloaded trucks of food and trunks filled with ice and distributed both to people in the community affected by the category four hurricane.
