There is a critical need for funds for recovery work from the major storms of 1999–in particular, Hurricane Floyd and the May tornadoes in Oklahoma. The damage from Hurricane Floyd may exceed that of Hurricane Andrew. UMCOR urges all United Methodist churches to respond to the Churchwide Appeal for Major Storm Devastation '99, Advance #982460-1. Current requests from the Bahamas and affected conferences in New Jersey, Virginia and Oklahoma exceed one million dollars, and recovery in North Carolina will take several million dollars. During this season of giving, please remember those who have lost so much and will spend the next few years rebuilding their lives. There is an urgent need for volunteers in several disaster recovery sites. Volunteers will be needed throughout the coming year in Oklahoma to rebuild homes devastated by the tornadoes. There is inside work to be done during the winter months, and both senior highs and adults are encouraged to volunteer. In North Carolina, volunteers will be needed after the beginning of the new year and for many months to come. In Virginia, volunteers are needed to help with general rebuilding and with more skilled construction, electrical and plumbing tasks. There is also a need for building materials in Virginia. If you can volunteer, or donate and transport materials, please call the Volunteer Line at (800) 918-3100.
Gifts may be made through local United Methodist Churches, or by calling (800) 554-8583. Credit card donations are accepted at that number. Please pray for all who suffer from natural and human-made disasters, hunger, and poverty.
