By the time Hurricane Lenny finally moves away from the islands, it will have dumped up to two feet of rain on some of the northern Leeward Islands, causing extensive damage and flooding. The devastation of this late season hurricane will place an even greater demand on UMCOR's resources. UMCOR is reaching out to survivors of the more recent earthquake in Turkey as well as those who are still recovering from the earlier earthquake. UMCOR, in conjunction with ACT (Action by Churches Together) is developing plans to refurbish damaged elementary schools and to establish a youth house. UMCOR also is working with a local organization in the Adapazari municipality to provide emergency mobile shelters for those left homeless. The Deputy General Secretary of UMCOR recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo where he visited with church and secular leaders and learned first hand about the plight of refugees and internally displaced persons and about the war that continues to devastate this country and so many others surrounding it.
