The UMCOR teams in Macedonia in collaboration with ACT (Action by Churches Together), are rebuilding and reconstructing homes, rehabilitating and dismantling camps, providing mine awareness trainings, and assisting special needs groups, as thousands of refugees return to Kosovo. UMCOR and ACT continue to develop programs which will generate jobs and income to local people, help with the needs of women and children, and support efforts to help Kosovar war victims. Many refugees are still without homes and fear landmines.
Thirteen annual conferences received more than $883,000 in support of the children of Africa. The Louisiana annual conference raised $233,000 for African children. The Little Rock and North Arkansas annual conferences gathered more than 4,700 school kits for the children of Mozambique. Annual Conferences continue to collect and send health, sewing, school, kitchen, and layette kits to UMCOR's Depot for worldwide distribution. Call the Depot volunteer line (800) 334-4221 for further information on this and other volunteer opportunities. Immigration attorneys and attorneys wishing to be trained in immigration law, are needed to volunteer to serve in immigration clinics established throughout the country by "Justice for Our Neighbors," a new program of UMCOR's refugee area. UMCOR continues to respond to the Kosovar refugee crisis, however, please remember to contribute to refugee camps in Africa which are infested with widespread cholera, malnutrition, overcrowding, and other public health diseases. Your gifts to International Disaster Response, #982450-8 (designated to African refugees) make it possible for UMCOR to respond quickly in critical situations. For further information on refugee resettlement please see the UMCOR website at {http://gbgm-umc.org/global/refugees/resettle.html} or contact UMCOR's refugee office at 212-870-3807, fax: 212-870-3624. Please pray for those who suffer from disasters, war, hunger, and poverty. UMCOR Hotline: |
