UMCOR is responding to the Kosovo refugee crisis in a number of ways.
In Macedonia and Albania, UMCOR is responding through our ecumenical partner ACT (Action by Churches Together). An ACT team has traveled to the northern areas of Albania to assess the situation and plan for a large scale response. Much of the assistance will be targeted in areas of central Albania where many of the refugees will be transported. Immediate assistance will include food, water, cooking utensils, bedding, tents, medical supplies, and sanitation facilities. In Macedonia and Montenegro, ACT partners are also distributing food and securing shelter for refugees.
The UMCOR offices in Bosnia are responding to several thousand refugees who have fled there. UMCOR is preparing a container filled with health kits, food, blankets and other relief supplies which will be distributed by the UMCOR staff in Bosnia. More health kits and Medicine Boxes are needed. For further information, see the UMCOR website http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor or call the UMCOR Depot at (800) 814-8765.
UMCOR is also in communication with United Methodist Bishop Bolleter in Europe who has been working with displaced people in Kosovo for the past year.
You may join in the response to the refugees by giving to UMCOR's International Disaster Response, #982450-8. Designate your gift, "Kosovo Emergency."
As we remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ this week we are reminded of God's presence in the darkest of times and the ultimate triumph of life. Please pray for those who suffer from the violence of war and have a blessed Easter.
