UMCOR has sent 10 containers of food, blankets, and water to Colombia for victims of the earthquakes, and another container is on the way this week. The Methodist Church in Bogota has begun a project to assist 8,000 displaced persons with food and child care which will enable the adults to seek employment. Thousands of victims whose homes and communities were destroyed fled to Bogota seeking assistance and employment. Please join in this response by giving to UMCOR's International Disaster Response #982450-8. Designate Colombia Earthquake.
In the Florida Keys and along the Mississippi Coast interfaith groups are assisting hundreds of people whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Georges. Volunteers have done extensive clean up and roof repair and are currently helping with more extensive repairs and rebuilding.
Recovery efforts from both Georges and Mitch continue in the Caribbean and Central America with shipments of food and other essential supplies, volunteer work teams and financial grants. On the island of Nevis, UMCOR is helping to reestablish the fishing industry which was destroyed by the storm. On St. Kitts, UMCOR has helped government agencies develop new building codes and inspection procedures that will help lesson storm damage in the future. Your ongoing support of the Churchwide Appeal for Hurricanes 98, Advance #982515-0 makes this multi-faceted response possible.
Please remember those who suffer from disaster, war, hunger and poverty in your prayers.
