Since the New Year began, UMCOR has responded with financial grants to 11 different emergencies and critical situations. These include grants to church partners and Conferences in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Florida who continue to respond with humanitarian assistance to victims of Hurricanes Georges and Mitch. Please continue your generous gifts to Hurricanes '98, Advance #982515-0. They will be needed for years to come.
UMCOR is also responding to the continuing health and medical needs of women and children who were affected by the Chernobyl nuclear accident many years ago. Victims suffer from both mental and physical disabilities and the beneficiaries of this assistance now live in Kazakhstan and Cuba. Your gifts to UMCOR's International Disaster Response, Advance #982450-8 make this ministry possible. Gifts to this Advance will also help provide food relief over these winter months for people in the Chukotka region of Siberia.
Other responses include ongoing recovery efforts from flooding in Texas, Advance #901315-0, and the Devil's Lake area of North Dakota, Advance #901680-3.
There are many volunteer opportunities in the U.S., the Caribbean and Central America over the next few months. Call the Volunteer Line at (800) 918-3100 for further information.
Happy New Year, and please remember those who suffer from hunger, poverty, disaster and war in your prayers.
