UMCOR continues to respond to the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch in Central America. The infrastructures of Honduras and Nicaragua have been significantly compromised by the damage inflicted by Mitch. The Mosquito area of Honduras and the communities surrounding Lake Managua in Nicaragua continue to be threatened as the water levels rise due to run-off . The normal production of cash crops like coffee and bananas will take 2 to 3 years before production can resume, threatening long-term economic recovery efforts. UMCOR is working through our church partners CCD (the Christian Commission on Development) in Honduras and CEPAD (Council of Evangelical Churches) in Nicaragua with monetary and material resources. Currently, the most critical needs are for food, water and medical assistance.

The Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts, Nevis and Antigua are still in early recovery stages following Hurricane Georges. The damage to these areas, especially the Dominican Republic, are as significant as Honduras and Nicaragua. Counseling assistance is being added as an immediate critical need in these countries.

The most effective way to respond to victims of Hurricane Mitch and Georges is through a financial gift. You may give to UMCOR's Hurricanes 98, Advance #982515-0. Your gift will be used where it is most needed, or you may designate it for a specific country.

Additional flood supplies have been shipped in response to renewed flooding in the Houston area. Damage assessments of flood areas are taking place in Kansas, as well as assessments of tornado damage in Brownsville, Texas.
