Thank you for calling the United Methodist Committee on Relief Hotline, Friday, September 4, 1998.
UMCOR disaster consultants and conference coordinators are working to assess damage in the Alabama/West Florida, Florida, South Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina Conferences following Hurricane Earl. Heavy rains from Earl caused flooding and initial reports indicate that there may be significant damage from the tornadoes spawned by Earl. UMCOR has sent a grant to the North Carolina Conference for relief efforts from Hurricane Bonnie, and UMCOR is sending additional supplies to the Southwest Texas Conference as they continue to clean-up from the floods caused by Tropical Storm Charley. To join in these clean-up and recovery efforts please give to UMCOR's Hurricanes 98, Advance #982515-0.
UMCOR invites interested United Methodists to apply to join a two-week, ecumenical visit to Africa in May 1999, to visit refugee camps and refugee projects. The cost of travel and accommodations will be $2,500 to which UMCOR will contribute a small scholarship. Applicants must have experience working with refugees in the U.S. and have the ability and commitment to interpret their experience to local churches in order to increase awareness and interest in refugee ministry. For an application form call UMCOR at (212) 870-3805, fax (212) 870-3624 or e-mail (liliaf@gbgm-umc.org). The deadline for completed applications is October 16, 1998.
Please remember those who suffer from hunger, poverty, disasters, and war in your prayers.
