Thank you for calling the United Methodist Committee on Relief Hotline, Friday, August 21, 1998.
UMCOR staff members are currently in North Korea to continue assessing needs caused by the famine and to explore further opportunities for relief efforts. The U.S. delegation that recently returned from North Korea reports that as many as two million people have died so far from famine or famine related diseases, and that almost every North Korean child under the age of seven is receiving international food relief. UMCOR continues to play a major role in relief efforts. Please give to UMCOR's North Korea Emergency, #226435. Twelve long-term volunteers are needed in Houston, Texas to help pack relief items, load the ship that will be leaving in November, and travel on the ship to and from North Korea. Call the Volunteer Line at (800) 918-3100 to find out more.
UMCOR is also contributing to famine relief efforts in Sudan through ACT (Action by Churches Together). To join in that response, please give to UMCOR's International Disaster Response #982450 and designate your gift Sudan Famine.
Volunteers are needed to help with rebuilding efforts following last April's devastating tornado in Jefferson County, Alabama which destroyed at least 840 homes. Teams are needed for this fall and next spring. Please call the Volunteer Line (800) 918-3100 for further information.
Please remember those who suffer from hunger, poverty, disasters, and war in your prayers.
