UMCOR Hotline-- United Methodist Committee on Relief

July 31, 1998

Our ecumenical partner ACT (Action by Churches Together) has reported that the worldwide response to the tidal wave in Papua New Guinea has been overwhelming. Thank you for so generously contributing to this appeal.

There are many other parts of the world that are currently experiencing or recovering from major disasters: There is devastating flooding in Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, Bohemia, and Tajikistan; a series of cyclones over the last several months have devastated French Polynesia; 10 million people are affected by drought in Northeastern Brazil; civil war and drought have caused famine in Sudan; and the conflict in Kosovo has displaced as many as 79,000 people from their homes. UMCOR is responding to these many emergencies with grants that provide immediate, humanitarian relief and assist with recovery and rebuilding efforts. Please give generously to UMCOR's International Disaster Response #982450. You may designate your gift for a specific disaster or your gift will be used where it is most needed.

Many areas of the U.S. have been affected by tornadoes and floods over the past several months and are in need of volunteers to help with recovery and rebuilding. Volunteers are needed in Florida, Alabama, East Ohio, Tennessee and Georgia. Some of these requests are urgent. Please call the Volunteer Line at (800) 918-3100 for further information. Your continuing gifts to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response #901670 will assist with recovery efforts.

Please remember those who suffer from hunger, poverty, disasters, and war in your prayers.
