UMCOR Hotline-- United Methodist Committee on Relief

May 29, 1998

Farmers in Northern New York continue to suffer the effects of last winter's ice storm. They lost many cows and as a result have lost as much as 50 percent of their income. UMCOR has recently given a grant to the North Central New York Conference for their continued response to this crisis. Please support UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response, #901670 to join in this and other recovery efforts from the devastating storms which affected many areas of the country over the past few months.

Disaster coordinators from 17 annual conferences attended UMCOR's National Hurricane Conference this past week. UMCOR staff and consultants offered training and retraining on preparing for and responding to hurricanes. The official start of the hurricane season is June 1. Gifts to UMCOR's Hurricanes 97-98, Advance #982515-0 will be used to respond to this season's storms, and for continuing recovery from last year's Typhoon Paka in Guam.

The truck filled with 12 tons of bedding paks, health, sewing, and school kits given by United Methodist Women at the Women's Assembly in Orlando, was unloaded at the UMCOR Depot in Baldwin, Louisiana this past week. Over 15,000 kits have been received from this effort, and they continue to arrive. These resources are used all over the world--in Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Africa, and the Caribbean. For a list of material resources and instructions on assembling kits, call the UMCOR Depot at (800) 814-8765.

Please remember those who suffer from hunger, poverty, disasters, and war in your prayers.
