UMCOR Hotline-- United Methodist Committee on Relief

May 1, 1998

United Methodists have begun a long-range recovery project to rebuild 60 homes destroyed by the flooding in the Albany area of South Georgia several weeks ago. UMCOR is assisting those who fall through the cracks, or cannot afford to repay government loans--such as the elderly and persons with disabilities. Volunteer teams are scheduled into the summer and will be needed for probably two years. Call the Volunteer Line at (800) 918-3100 for information, or join in this project by contributing financially to UMCOR's El Niño Response, #982328-6. Other disaster areas covered by the El Niño Advance are Florida, Minnesota, Alabama, Peru, Ecuador and Indonesia.

United Methodists are part of a strong interfaith organization that has formed in Birmingham, Alabama to assist with recovering from the tornadoes. A volunteer coordinator has been hired and rebuilding work will be underway soon. Nashville residents are still cleaning up from the tornadoes there and are beginning repair and rebuilding work. Please give to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response #90670-1 to join in these recovery efforts.

A container of material resources is on its way to Armenia. Your gifts to Contain Your Joy , Advance #982730-7 help cover shipping costs for this and other shipments of material resources to places around the world, including Angola, Mozambique, Haiti and Cuba.

Three volunteer work teams are scheduled for building projects on Montserrat this summer. A total of ten teams are needed. At least one member of each team must be skilled in concrete block construction. Call (800) 675-0362, code 32 to find out more about this volunteer opportunity.

Please pray for victims of disasters, hunger, poverty, and war.
