Thank you for calling the United Methodist Committee on Relief Hotline, Thursday, April 9, 1998.
UMCOR has sent an additional grant for humanitarian relief for victims of Typhoon Paka which caused major devastation on Guam last December. Your gifts to Hurricanes 97 and 98, Advance #982515-0 will assist with the continued recovery from this storm.
UMCOR has also sent a grant to purchase seeds, hand tools, and fertilizers for Rwandan citizens still living in camps along the border. You may join in this response by giving to the Bishops' Appeal and Campaign for Africa, #101275-4.
Famine relief efforts continue for the people of North Korea. UMCOR has contributed $100,000 towards a shipment of rice, and is preparing to send 15 containers full of seeds, relief boxes, and bulk food. The people of North Korea will need significant food aid at least until this year's harvest is in. Please continue your support of UMCOR's North Korea Emergency, #226435. A day of fasting, prayer and action on behalf of people suffering from famine in North Korea will be held April 24-25 in the U.S., South Korea, and other countries. For more information, call UMCOR at (800) 554-8583.
You may respond to continuing recovery efforts from El Niño-related storms in three ways: by giving financially through UMCOR's El Niño Response, #982328-6; by volunteering--call (800) 918-3100; or by sending relief supplies and rebuilding materials--call (800) 814-8765 for a list of materials and shipping instructions.
Our offices will be closed for Good Friday. Have a joyful Easter.
