UMCOR Hotline-- United Methodist Committee on Relief

February 13, 1998

Disaster coordinators and volunteers in the California/Pacific Conference are organizing for long-term response and recovery from the flooding. Recovery efforts continue in other parts of the United States that have been affected by this winter's severe weather: Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, and the Northeast. Your gifts to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response #901670 enable United Methodists around the country to respond to these disasters.

UMCOR has sent a grant to the California/Nevada conference for continuing recovery from last year's devastating floods in the Northwest. You may join in this response by giving to UMCOR's Advance #901720-4, "Northwest Floods."

Applications for Volunteer in Mission teams to Montserrat are being accepted. Persons with masonry and concrete skills, general carpentry, plumbing and electrical skills are needed to construct housing for people who have been displaced by volcanic activity. Call 800-675-0362, code 32, for more information.

UMCOR has sent a grant to the United Methodist Church of Angola for the women's landmine prosthesis program. Until now, some men, mostly soldiers, who have lost a limb to a landmine have been able to get prostheses, but no program has been available for women, who bear the burden of providing for their families. You may participate in this emergency response by giving to UMCOR's Advance #105630-3.

Please remember those affected by hunger, poverty and disasters in your prayers.
