UMCOR emergency response staff and consultants are in communication with conferences in various parts of the United States who have experienced severe weather over the past week. Clean-up and recovery efforts are hampered due to continuing rain and snow. There has been so much rain in Florida that they have not been able to recover from the December storms. Areas that were flooded in Western North Carolina now have two feet of snow. UMCOR will continue to respond as the damage is assessed and needs are determined. Your gifts to Domestic Disaster Response #901670 will be needed throughout the coming weeks to help people recover from this winter's weather.
Interreligious groups are forming to respond to people affected by the ice storm in the Northeast. Power is restored in most areas, but the effects of the storm have been devastating and will be long-term for many people. Many dairy farmers are having to replace entire herds and maple growers have been told that it will be 25 years before the trees produce enough sap to harvest. Those who are frail, elderly, ill, or have limited resources have been particularly hard hit. Volunteers for clean-up will be needed in the coming weeks as the weather begins to warm. The conferences are planning to receive work groups immediately after Easter. Interested volunteers may call Paul Freeman in the North Central New York Conference at 315/659-8923 or Larry and Ann Barber in Troy Conference at 802/878-2426. Please continue your generous gifts to Advance #901670, designated "Northeast Winter Storm."
Please remember those affected by hunger, poverty and disasters in your prayers.
