UMCOR Hotline-- United Methodist Committee on Relief

January 16, 1998

Last week's ice-storm affected areas of the North Central New York, Troy and New England Conferences. Disaster coordinators in each conference are actively working to respond to this emergency. UMCOR has assisted the conferences in providing generators, blankets and heaters and will continue to respond as needs arise. Because material needs are immediate and short-term, the most effective way for United Methodists to respond to this emergency is with financial offerings. Please give to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response #901670 and designate your gift Northeast Winter Storm.

Members of UMCOR's Catastrophic Disaster Response team have sent back a first-hand report of the devastation on Guam from Typhoon Paka. 3,000 homes were destroyed, and 31,000 received major damage. Three or four families are crowded into homes designed for one family, and 2,000 families are living in tents. Thirty percent of the island is still without power. The UMCOR team is helping to establish an interfaith disaster recovery organization. Significant financial assistance will be needed. Please give generously to UMCOR ' Hurricanes 97, Advance #982515-0.

There has been flash flooding in parts of Holston and Western North Carolina Conferences. United Methodist Men from Holston have sent 200 volunteers to help with clean-up. You can join in this response by giving to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response #901670. Please remember those affected by these emergencies in your prayers.
