Troy Conference in Upstate New York and Vermont reports that ice storms and floods are wreaking havoc on the area. Power lines are down and roads are closed. Hundreds of thousands of people are without power throughout Northern New England. Farmers who have lost power have been unable to milk their cows. The conference is supplying generators and pumps and will continue to respond as needs arise. Generators will also be sent from the UMCOR Depot in Louisiana. Please give to UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response #901670 to assist with this emergency.
Three members of UMCOR's Catastrophic Disaster Response team will be in Guam and the Mariana Islands over the next several days helping to assess the damage from recent typhoons and develop recovery plans. To assist with recovery efforts please give to UMCOR's Hurricanes '97, Advance #982515-0.
The General Secretary of the Board of Global Ministries and other staff members are currently in North Korea to learn more about the famine, determine needs and explore further ways to respond. Please continue to support UMCOR's North Korea Emergency, #226435. Your gifts are critically needed as the famine is expected to grow worse during this year.
Please remember those affected by emergencies, hunger and poverty in your prayers.
